Celebrate 250 Years of Freedom — And Discover Eastern NC History
In 2026, we’re invited to step back in time — and celebrate more than 250 years of American history through the lens of North Carolina’s role in shaping our nation. The NC First in Freedom Festival will run February 21–28, 2026, bringing together local communities, historians, artists, and business partners across southeastern North Carolina for a full week of events honoring our shared heritage.
The First in Freedom Festival promises a rich mix of history, art, and community — ideal for families, history buffs, and anyone who loves our state’s story. Highlights include:
Historical reenactments and living-history encampments: Visitors can explore key events from colonial and revolutionary-era North Carolina — including life under British rule, the resistance leading up to the Revolution, and the journey toward independence.
Cultural exhibits and arts programming: The festival celebrates not just battles and politics, but our cultural heritage — music, visual arts, crafts, storytelling, and more. Communities from multiple counties will contribute exhibits and events.
Commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Battle of Moores Creek Bridge: One of the earliest and most decisive Patriot victories in the Revolution — and a key turning point in America's road to independence — will be honored during the festival’s culminating events in late February.
Special appearances & engaging programming: The festival will also feature special events, including a meeting with a high-profile historical fiction author (for fans of historical literature), guided battlefield tours, and opportunities to engage with history in tangible ways.
Whether you love colonial history, enjoy art and culture, or want a meaningful community experience, there’s something for everyone.
