Rising proudly along the Cape Fear River, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA is more than a landmark—it’s a powerful journey into America’s past. Just minutes from historic downtown Wilmington, this iconic World War II battleship invites visitors of all ages to step aboard and experience history where it happened.
Commissioned in 1941, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA earned 15 battle stars during World War II, taking part in every major naval offensive in the Pacific Theater. Nicknamed “The Showboat,” she became known for her strength, resilience, and advanced design. Today, she stands as a tribute to the more than 10,000 North Carolinians who served aboard her—and to all who served during the war.
Walking the decks of the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA is an immersive experience. Visitors can explore nine levels of the ship, including gun turrets, the bridge, crew quarters, mess halls, and the engine rooms. Informational exhibits, restored spaces, and interactive displays help bring daily life aboard the ship into vivid focus.
